Printing jargon

Printing jargon

Printing colourfulness

Colourfulness is described by A/B, which means that A and B depict front and back printing page
For example:

  • 1/1 – double-sided monochromatic printing
  • 2/0 – double-sided two colours
  • 4/4 – CMYK – double-sided full-coloured printing etc.
  • 5/5 – CMYK + 5th colour, e.g. PANTONE

Choice of printing colours

  • printing with spot colour (type according to the pattern book Pantone)
  • printing CMYK (full-coloured printing) – colourful scale is created by a combination of 4 basic colours
    C – Cyan (azure), M – Magenta (purple), Y – Yellow (yellow), K – Key (key/black)

Format

In calculation, please, distinguish the final format from the printing format:
For example: leaflet A5= A4 folded into the final result A5= A5 folded into the final result A6 etc.

Typometrical system

Didot point system

  • 1 point = 0,3759 mm
  • 12 points = 1 cicero
  • 1 cicero = 4,513 mm

Bindings

limp binding - V1, V2, V3, V4
semi-solid binding - V5, V6
solid binding - V7, V8

  • V1 – saddle-stitching (catalogues, notebooks…
  • V2 – perfect binding (brochures with more than……sheets
  • V3 – needle binding + edge sealing
  • V4 – thread-sealing, needle brochures binding
  • V5 – semi-solid binding
  • V6 – children’s puzzles (folding picture-books)
  • V7 – soft-cover book production, e.g. half-bound
  • V8 – hard-cover book production, linen, files covered with one piece of book cloth
